Character Information
Character Name: Coran Hieronymous Wimbleton Smythe
Fandom: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Character History: Much of Coran's life prior to the start of the Voltron: Legendary Defender canon is unknown as of Season 3. The information that can be gathered is as such;
- Coran is at least 600 years old (though his exact age or what an Altean year is has yet to be determined), not including his 10,000 year sleep in cryogenic stasis. This is referenced first by Coran citing the age of the Castle of Lions as at least 10,600 years old and as being built by his grandfather. The second is Coran telling Hunk of how he used to visit Balmeras in the past with his grandfather during the construction of the Castle of Lions. Therefore, we can conclude that Coran was alive before the construction of the castle.
- He is considered on the later end of middle-aged, as referred to when he wound up with a case of the "slipperies," a unique Altean virus that typically only occurs "later in life" in Altean individuals, quoting from Princess Allura when explaining the condition.
- At some point in his life, Coran was known to barter with traders of the Unilu species. This resulted in him giving three quarters of his shipment of lango in exchange for a used pogo oscillator, something which was said to result in Alfor being "not pleased," which we can only assume means he wound up with the raw end of the deal at the time. He can be assumed to have learned from this experience.
- He was present during the construction of Voltron and all of the history accompanying it, including being able to bear witness to the relationship King Alfor had with other planetary leaders, most notably Emperor Zarkon of Planet Daibazaal, Trigel of the Dalterion Belt, Gyrgan of Planet Rygnirath, and Blaytz of Planet Nalquod. It is assumed that he has been the advisor to the Altean Royal Family for a very long time (possibly centuries), though just how long isn't specified.
What is known for certain is that Coran bore witness to Zarkon's betrayal of the Paladins' trust in his time, along with the resulting fall-out and Zarkon's warped personality thanks to what is assumed to be an over-exposure to Quintessence. It wasn't long after Zarkon's declaration of war against Altea and his campaign to gather the lions of Voltron for his own purposes that Coran, as a trusted aid to King Alfor, was put into cryogenic stasis in order to fulfil his duty to protect and guide Princess Allura whenever they would wake up. It wouldn't be for 10,000 years that he would wake with Allura, finding the grim reality of the fate of both the king and of their homeworld; King Alfor was dead, and Altea had long since been destroyed. So far as he and Allura knew, they were the last Alteans alive.
When he woke up, it was also in the presence of five strange creatures he would later learn were called Earthlings, or human beings. In a time of dire need, he helped Allura set them up as the new Paladins of Voltron, letting them know of the locations of the wayard lions and of the Galra Empire's forces in relation to them. At first he was skeptical of the paladins and their ability, and he was the main source of knowledge when it came to their training and piloting of the Voltron Lions.
It was gradual, but over time he came to care for and trust the paladins on various levels. It was a trust most notably earned when Lance selflessly pushed Coran out of range of an explosion that may have otherwise threatened his life, with the result leaving Lance injured and in a comatose state. He bonded with Hunk during their time on the Balmera, admired Pidge's knowledge and ingenuity, and found himself seeing the Paladins as a second family over time.
His worry for Allura in particular always existed, from when she gave up a significant portion of her energy to revitalize a dying Balmera to when she was manipulated by the digitized memories of King Alfor, which had been corrupted at the time. He was single-mindedly determined to help keep her safe, going so far as to place blame on Shiro when she had sacrificed herself as a prisoner in order to help Shiro escape a Galran Transport Ship. It was later that he realized that such blame wasn't warranted and that he was acting on emotion, and he expressed some fragility at not wanting to lose Allura on top of everything else that had already been taken away from him.
Once Coran and the paladins retrieved Allura and managed to escape the Galra Empire's grasp, there was some time taken to reunite everyone after the lions and the castle got separated from one another due to their worm hole being corrupted on escape. Once they were all together again, they met with a rather interesting Galra man, Ulaz; upon reaching a location that Shiro remembered was programmed into his robotic arm, Ulaz snuck aboard the ship and informed the Paladins about an anti-Galran Empire organization called the Blade of Marmora, before they were attacked by a RoBeast (a name Hunk came up with to describe the giant monsterous robot creatures coming after them from the Galran forces). To help the Paladins, Allura, and Coran escape the RoBeast's assault, Ulaz sacrificed his life, showing the first sign of anything remotely good from anyone of Galra heritage that Coran has seen since before the destruction of Altea.
After responding to a distress call from Planet Olkaria and being rewarded with several Olkarion Flying cubes as recompense for Voltron's services, the castle and everyone in it were forced to evade dogged pursuit from Emperor Zarkon of the Galra Empire, unsure of how he was tracking them at the time. It caused the teludav's scaultrite lenses to fracture to the point where the teludav was inoperable. Considering that the teludav is the device that makes the castle capable of creating wormholes and allows it to travel through enormous distances of open space in mere seconds, this wound up creating a very big problem for them all to overcome as it took away their ability to flee from Galran Fleets quickly.
During their mad attempts to flee, Coran attempted to earn the trust of the Red Lion in absence of Keith, who had taken off with Allura just before they fell under attack from the Galra again. Unfortunately he was rejected, bringing him back as the main operator of the Castle of Lions while simultaneously proving just how great a distance a Lion's bond with their chosen paladin will reach. This, unfortunately, confirmed just what method Zarkon was using to track them all down; his former bond to the Black Lion.
Soon after this, the group took a trip to an Unilu swap moon (which, to the Earthlings, seemed like a rather normal shopping mall) in order to try and find some replacement scaultrite lenses for the castle's teludav. Coran was the only one to keep a supposed pirate's disguise on through the trip and had quite a bit of trouble finding what he was looking for, but soon his efforts were rewarded and he found an Unilu swap shop that had the scaultrite lenses he was looking for. With some clever bargaining with the Unilu manning the store, Coran was able to trade a single Olkarion floating cube for an entire stack of lenses, moments before escaping the mall with the paladins and a cow. Blame Lance and Pidge for the cow.
Soon after, there was a shocking revelation for both Coran and Princess Allura. They travelled to the main base of the Blade of Marmora, after Shiro assured them that at least for the moment Zarkon couldn't track them down and jeopardize the Blade of Marmora in the process. Keith and Shiro were the ones chosen to go to the base, leaving Allura, Coran, and the other paladins in the Castle of Lions to wait. When they returned with representatives from the Blade, the most startling news came to light; Keith, the paladin of the Red Lion and a trusted ally, had Galra blood.
There is no on-screen interaction for how this revelation went or for how anyone (save Allura) reacted as of writing this application, so any speculation of how Coran reacted to it will not be discussed in the application as a result.
Afterwards, a plan was formed between the Blade of Marmora and the Paladins of Voltron; with everyone having their roles to play, a plan to make Zarkon's command ship vulnerable and to attack it while it was vulnerable was formed, with Coran being sent to Olkarion on a pod in order to help the Olkari construct a massive teludav, the purpose of which would separate Zarkon's command ship from his main fleet. Before leaving, he gave Keith and Hunk an old instructional video on the biology of a Weblum and how to retrieve scaultrite from one, as that was their role to play in the plan.
Once everyone was gathered and the plan was ready to be set into motion, there was a brief moment where Coran had a private conversation with Allura, one expressing worry that the final battle may result in the end of her life. He was reluctant and saddened, but he accepted that it might be a risk they'd have to take when Allura did, remaining a loyal aid to Allura and respecting her decision both as his princess and as a friend he cared for greatly.
He witnessed a great deal of horrifying events in the battle that came with their plan, from believing the paladins dead for a short time after they were attacked by powerful magic to seeing a reflected laser from their own castle bounced back at it, nearly spelling their doom. It was with great worry that he watched Allura and members of the Blade of Marmora set off to Zarkon's ship to stop the source of the magic, who they knew to be Zarkon's witch at that time thanks to intelligence received from the Blade. She returned weak but in one piece, much to Coran's relief. Unfortunately, not everyone was so lucky.
The end of the battle resulted in a seemingly mortal wound inflicted on Emperor Zarkon when he tried to fight Voltron single-handedly, but the cost to the Paladins, Allura, and Coran was great as well. Voltron returned to the Castle of Lions, with a lifeless Black Lion being returned to its hangar. Coran was running with everyone else to find the cockpit of the Black Lion empty, only showing the Black Bayard in its spot when it wasn't there before. Shiro had disappeared, and they didn't know why or where he had gone.
It is at this point that Coran is going to wake up in Nautilus, fresh from battle against Zarkon's command ship at the end of Season 2 of Voltron: Legendary Defender.
Coran on the Voltron Wikia (For any additional information)
Character Personality: "Blah blah blah, crazy words, moustache!" – Pidge, while trapped in a garbage nebula
Coran is without a doubt the most eccentric member of Team Voltron. He is quirky, animated, and overall a very reactionary man, though it is questionable if he acts that way simply to lighten the mood for whoever may be around him (as, when alone, he has a much more serious demeanour even in the middle of a fight). When around the others in general, he will make terrible puns, over-dramatic statements, and regale long tales of his youth to whoever will listen.
He is also shown to be foppish, fashion-conscious with several different costumes on board the Castle of Lions for himself and even describing himself as a "fashion pirate". Some of the costumes can be described as disguises, while others are meant to be flashy to the point where he appears to be an Earthling Super-Hero (though it is uncertain if that is the intent of such costumes or if such things existed on Altea). Even outside of his fashion sense, he has a well-established sense of confidence in terms of his appearance, referring to himself as "a gorgeous man" while demonstrating an Olkarion Flying Cube's mimicking capabilities to the paladins at one point.
Coran, often, likes to have fun with his plans as a result of his eccentric nature. On the Balmera he used a Galra drone to disguise himself and Hunk to try and approach other Galra drones in the way of a crystal they needed to retrieve. He used a ridiculous failure of a bluff before revealing the true plan, which was Hunk's weapon hidden and ready for action on the revelation of the two. However, he doesn't always think such plans all the way through, as it wasn't long after that before the two were caught after Coran had hurt himself trying to lift the crystal alone in that particular instance.
Through the ages he has also learned to negotiate effectively, having failed experiences to look back on. Whether it's for diplomacy or barter, Coran is your man. His earlier encounters bartering with Unilu traders resulted in failed barters, but through his experience he learned how to manipulate the Unilu into trading him what he actually wanted for a relatively inexpensive barter (for him). It isn't quite the same as diplomacy with other people, but it is safe to say that his people skills have only gotten better over the years of his life, knowing how political talks should go in terms of keeping up appearances and uniting people under a common goal. It is reasonable to assume such experiences come in no small part from his involvement with King Alfor.
When he's not acting silly, he's a good advisor and mentor to Allura and the Paladins. He is a sympathetic ear, a shoulder to cry on, a source of knowledge and a compassionate heart that they all seem to be drawn to. He takes them and their concerns seriously, listening well to them if they just need to talk and caring for them almost as if every one of them were a member of his family. Although not to the level of fatherly affection, he holds compassion for life in general and grieves whenever he sees cruelty and injustice inflicted on undeserving targets by other creatures.
In fact, his compassionate heart may be a part of why he is quite sensitive and emotional. In particular Coran is touchy about his age, insisting at first that he didn't have "the slipperies" as that is an old person virus and is very gross, while insisting he is "young-ish." He even yelled at Pidge to leave him alone when she brought it up to him at one point. Later Coran was wise enough to recognize that he needed help, admitted that he had the virus, apologized to Pidge, and asked for her to come back and help him.
It was not the first instance of Coran losing his temper at the paladins and later apologizing for his emotional outburst – the first on-screen instance of this we see is with Shiro, upon learning that Allura had sacrificed herself for Shiro's sake and became a Galran prisoner. Again, he later apologized to Shiro, telling him that it wasn't his fault and expressing that he had already lost so much, and he didn't want to lose Allura on top of everything else.
His passion, at times, can be funnelled into courage. Coran has been shown to hold off a huge Galran fleet alone in the castle of Lions, stalling for time while allowing the Paladins to complete dangerous objectives. If he knows that the chances aren't good but the alternative is giving up, Coran has been known to take his chances even if he's afraid. It can be seen as recklessness, but as Coran will often preach caution where he feels needed, it is far more likely acting in spite of any fear he might have.
Throughout his life, it is also evident that Coran's passion can be funnelled into a love of learning. He is an accomplished scientist of varying fields (most notably Xenobiology and Engineering), a veteran pilot, and overall an intelligent man who has (presumably) never lost his love of learning. He enjoys showing off said knowledge as an opportunity to educate others, making him a natural teacher with any knowledge he finds relevant or interesting.
Overall, Coran is an excitable, eccentric, caring, intelligent, and dependable man, and he is a valuable part of Team Voltron. He is someone who would do anything for those he cares about and is passionate about his role in protecting the universe as a member of a well-functioning team.
Powers and Abilities: Over-all, Coran is known as a jack-of-all trades, seeming to know nearly everything the Paladins and Allura need to know throughout their journey. As an advisor and mentor he is invaluable, though that is not all he is capable of.
Chameleon-Like Abilities: Alteans as a species are known as a chameleon-like people. In order to blend in with the local populations, they can change their skin colour, their heights, and presumably more about themselves in physical manners (though we have yet to see the full extent of just what these transformations can do). This is an ability the Altean race in general has used as a means of diplomacy throughout their known history, though it has shown to have other uses for the Alteans.
Hand-to-Hand Combat: As quoted by Allura, a combat training simulation "set for the level of an Altean child" was enough to completely overwhelm the new Paladins of Voltron at first, implying that many (if not all) Alteans are educated in combat from a very young age. It is only reasonable to assume that Coran has such training as well, and even in his old age he has proven to be spry and nimble on screen – if occasionally a bit clumsy.
Combat Piloting: In absence of Allura, Coran has been proven capable of piloting the Castle of Lions. Although he more often takes a support role to her navigation, he has shown to be able to keep track of all of the castle's defense, weapons, and transport systems with a great deal of knowledge and experience under his belt. He has defended against entire fleets of Galran-ships almost single-handedly at the helm of the castle, proving his expertise with the castle's systems.
Engineering: Coran was present during the construction of the castle of lions, and repeatedly he has been shown to intimately know the castle's functions, along with how to manipulate and repair them. This knowledge also seems to apply to Voltron itself, as he was able to teach the new Paladins a great deal about how to pilot their lions, among other things.
Wisdom: Coran has always been shown as the advisor to the Altean Royal Family, most notably to Princess Allura. He also imparts wisdom and comfort onto the new Paladins of Voltron, offering advice and putting them through drills that he knows will make them better pilots as a whole. He coaches them through rougher passages and monitors them where needed, acting as a mentor and caregiver for the paladins as much as he does for Princess Allura.
Diplomacy: Coran is an experienced diplomat, guiding Allura's actions where need be and teaching her just how things work in political circles. It can be safely assumed that such experience comes from observation of King Alfor, as well as personal experiences in negotiations with a variety of different people throughout the universe.
Strategist: There are times when Coran has to think on his toes to come up with a plan, and he is never short of a vast assortment of plans where needed. Using his vast wealth of knowledge, Coran will create feasible scenarios on how he and Team Voltron can reach success, evaluating the risks appropriately in most instances and guiding the team with intelligence as well as with wisdom and compassion.
Xenobiology: Coran is well educated on a great number of various planets, peoples, and organisms throughout the known universe. His knowledge is near-encyclopedic, showing a love of learning and the depth of his knowledge throughout his above-600 years of life. This doesn't seem to apply to Earthlings at this time, though it will likely only be a matter of time before he learns all about Earthlings as well.
Culinary Arts: Although unappealing to the Earthling Palette, Coran is a skilled chef on a more nutritional level than anything else. He doesn't seem to value taste much as long as whoever he's feeding gets the essential nutrients they need in the process, though it is possible his tastes are just odd in general; he has been shown to love a wine named Nunvil that, as described by Lance, "tastes like hot dog water and feet". Whatever it is, he seems to believe healthy food should be a little disgusting and was put out when Hunk set out to try and prove otherwise.

All right, I think I've got this thing working. Hello, people of Nautilus!
[ The feed is showing an older gentleman wearing a broad smile, seemingly holding the camera in his hand as it's aimed up at him and that glorious moustache of his. ]
I am Coran Hieronymus Wimbleton Smythe -- I understand if that's a mouthful, so just Coran will be enough. I don't know a lot about this "wakened" business, but if there's a place where I can gather information about such things, being told where would be appreciated! As a reward, I wouldn't mind treating the people who helped me to a Paladin Lunch! ... Once I learn how to bend food, at least. Shouldn't be that difficult. Anyway, it's a healthy meal with everything you need!
And maybe some Nunvil as well. I'd love to share a drink with my peers before heading back home!

Conversing with Keith on the Test Drive Meme
Third Person: It was jarring, to be at the end of the fight with the lions towing the Black Lion back to the ship. To race to the cockpit of the Black Lion, only to find it without its pilot, with the black bayard still stuck in its spot. It had been a hard battle for all of them, and even with what they had gained, their loss was great too.
But it felt like watching a dramatic play of sorts. It left him aching to want to know what happened next, but the fact that it felt like he wasn't in his own body but a bystander watching events through his own eyes was strange enough...
And then, he woke up.
Coran's eyes opened to the fog in Nautilus's North District, the buildings so foreign to him that he might as well have been on another planet. Granted, he probably was, but his point still stood.
At first he was silent, only getting to his feet to look around and to try and evaluate what had just happened. It was disorienting to suddenly be not where he was, and in spite of his confidence in his own hand-to-hand combat he knew he was vulnerable without so much as a weapon to defend himself should it be needed. Who knew if he was somehow on a Galra colony!
He continued to remain quiet as he walked, trying to keep eye and ear out for anyone or anything familiar, but when he heard someone approaching from behind he immediately whirled around, hands at the ready to try and swat at whoever or whatever it was, "HIYA-A-AH!"
Unfortunately, his footing slipped and he wound up flailing to try and keep his balance. He managed after a moment, letting out a mutter of 'quiznak' before he straightened and got into a fighting stance again against whatever had dared to sneak up on him then and there. Granted, he couldn't quite see who it was through the fog, at least not initially, but who knew if the same could hold true for them?
"All right, I'm warning you! Drop your weapons if you want me to take it easy on you!" He shouted, hoping that his bluff, poor as it was, would work. He hadn't exactly had good track record with bluffing, but right now it was his best shot!
